Nine songs, or rather nine different sound environments that intertwine with each other, aimed at telling the story of different emotions and sensations felt from the moment of writing, to the moment of the collective arrangement, up to the moment of the recording.
'Dear Jane' aims to be a theme that winks at pop music with the specific sound offered by the acoustic guitar; I looked at the beauty of a simple melody, supported by a non-complex harmony. I decided to open the record with this track trying to guide the listener to the album in the softest and most delicate way possible, but also because I believe it is a song that fits well the first position in the listening experience.
'Porcelain', the only arrangement and collective performance of a non-original song on the album, pays homage to a very important group in the history of music, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Upon first listening to their version, I was immediately captured by the
possibility of arranging it in a more jazz way. Therefore, I worked on modifying the harmony, keeping the beautiful melody sung by
the frontman almost untouched.
'One For Uncle John', as the title itself wants to declare, is a tribute to a guitarist who I consider to be fundamental in my training, John Scofield. I wanted to write a song in his style, while still trying to give it my personal vision both in writing and performing. His latest album, "Uncle John's Band", naturally led me to title the song this way.
To write 'Apnea' I was inspired by water, and more precisely by an image of a person immersed in a pool tub. I tried to reproduce this natural element through the chords, always based on the use of open strings.
The only ballad on the album is the title track, 'Turning Point'. Inspired by the sounds of composers such as Wayne Shorter or Lage Lund, I sought a more complex harmony, with a rather simple melody that acted as a counterbalance.
'Stardust' is a personal guitar solo adaptation of one of the most beautiful songs in the history of jazz; composed by Hoagy Carmichael, I listened and was inspired by the version by George Benson, guitarist and singer.
A more rhythmic piece is 'Another Story', where the melody sees shifts within the rhythmic grid. This song, together with Apnea, is perhaps the one where the collective arrangement had the greatest presence. It offers within it ideas and structures typical of contemporary jazz, with irregular numbers of bars that form the sections on which it is based.
'Small House' is a delicate song and inspired, as in the case of 'Dear Jane', by the beauty of the acoustic guitar and the poetics of guitarist Julian Lage.
I wanted 'Round Town' to be a powerful song, with Rock and Fusion echoes, inspired by guitarist Tim Miller.
